Today is the second day here in Malaysia that the owner of the hotel where we are staying has loaned me his motorcycle to go to town. Last week I went to a smaller town just 10 miles or so north of the beach where our hotel is located. Today, I needed to go buy some baby food and diapers as well, so I have come all the way down to the provincial capital, Kuantan, about 30 miles away.
It is taking some time, but I think I am finally starting to get the hang of driving on the wrong side of the road. Every now and then, when there is nobody on the road to remind me what side you are supposed to drive on, I revert back to my old Chinese/American/Peruvian self (where we drive on the RIGHT side of the road!) and find myself back in the Right lane. That doesn’t last long though, because it usually doesn’t take but a minute for a Malaysian car coming at me head-on to remind me where I am really at!
I really don’t think I would enjoy always driving on the wrong side of the road. For a couple days I think I can manage to get by, but I am truly looking forward to getting back to the highways of China (minus the potholes!) !
