The Children’s Center

For the past couple of weeks, I have been working part-time as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in the Pediatric Medical Rehabilitation Unit at The Children’s Center in Bethany, Oklahoma. I worked as a CNA at The Children’s Center when I was still in high school way back in 2001-2002, before I left to be a missionary in China. I am really excited to be able to work here again during my family’s 3-4 month visit in the States!

The following is the testimony of one young man who spent time at The Children’s Center earlier this year:

During my stay at The Children’s Center, I met a lot of people and liked every one of them. Overall, the Pediatric Medical Rehabilitation Unit (PMRU) is a wonderful place to stay, not like my house, but pretty nice.  Miss Waltrip is a very nice teacher with a very nice smile. She laughs a lot! Lena, John, and Barbara are my main PT and OT. John kids around with me a lot. He has been working with me with putting on my socks and shoes. Vicky sees me on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for strengthening.  Amber and Lena do gait training with me on the treadmill in the mornings.  I sang the Lord’s Prayer while walking on the treadmill today.

The food, especially lunch, is excellent and Patty is a wonderful cook! In the mornings I have to take lime and orange flavor Tums; I just break the pill in half and shove V-8 down. My Tums are gross! I also take a vitamin that I just swallow like Tylenol. Dr. Wright has told me to stand up straight and tuck in my bottom when I walk, because he wants me to have a beautiful gait pattern. Leigh Ann is the main nurse here, I told another kid the other day to treat Leigh Ann nicely because you should always treat people the way you want to be treated.

I love to sing and I am working with Rachel on a CD of sacred hymns (click here to listen to two samples).

I am excited about transferring the material onto a CD. It has been a blessing to be in the company of Amber W, my teacher, and for her to allow me to talk about my stay here, at the PMRU. Miss Amber was so kind to comfort me when I was worried about my progress on the assessment that I had to take during my education sessions.

May God continue to bless each of you.
